60% | 70cl
This is a big one. Glenfarclas 105 is bottled at full cask strength, and it's widely credited as the first cask-strength single malt ever released, back in 1968. The name comes from its strength: 60% ABV is 105° in old British proof.
About Glenfarclas
Glenfarclas, in Ballindalloch, Speyside, has been owned and run by the Grant family since 1865. Its six direct-fired stills are the largest on Speyside, and its house style is rich and sherried.
Maturation
No age statement, but it's generally around 8–10 years old. Matured in oak casks with the distillery's signature sherry influence, then bottled at cask strength.
Nose
Deep and sherried, with cream, nuts, honey on toast and a touch of smoky coffee.
Palate
Silky, then spicy and peppery. Almond, praline, hazelnut, dried peel and ripe fruit.
Finish
Long, peppery and nutty.
How to enjoy
At 60%, go slowly. Taste a little neat, then add water a few drops at a time and watch it open up. Great with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a sticky dessert. It's one of the best-value cask-strength whiskies around.
